Problems copying old external drive to a new one. Do you have any suggestions?

Any comments or suggestions, no matter how brief are appreciated. Just think, if you’re the only one that answers this long-winded question no matter how long your answers is, you’ll probably get the 10 pts. I’m tryinig to copy an old external hard drive (FAT32) to a new bigger external one (NTFS, which I already formatted). There’s no operating system on the drive to be copied from, but I’ve installed programs on it. (My internal C drive, which is not involved in the copying that I want to do, has Windows on it and its registry.) I downloaded Norton Ghost 15.0 trial, but when I go to Advanced and click Copy drive I get a message that says This feature is not enabled. To enable this feature you may need to license the product. I love how they use the word may as if there’s some hope of doing it without coughing up the ungodly sum of $70 to simply copy a hard drive. Next I downloaded the Seagate and WD versions of the Acronis software, which are lite versions. Both of these wanted me to delete the partition and even in manual mode wouldn’t let me write anything but FAT32 to the new hard drive. I don’t understand why it can’t copy all the files and their attributes and whatever, making an exact clone of my drive without needing to start the new drive from scratch. I noticed the full version of Acronis True Image Home 2010 in the instruction manual gives an option to choose the format, so I downloaded it and sure enough the little dropdown menu apears (unlike in the lite versions which don’t give you an option at all), but the only thing listed is FAT32, even though the help file says I should be able to choose a number of formats, including the NTFS format I want. I then decide to look for other software, and found a Comparison of disk cloning software at wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_disk_cloning_software) and decide that Paragon Backup & Recovery looks promising, but after going to the manufacturer’s website and finding the free version, I see that the free version won’t copy drive to drive, so then I decide to go with DriveImage XML (which has a nice small file size comared to the other downloads). I’m able to start a drive to drive copy, and all seems to be going well, I let it run last night while I slept and in the morning it appears that 100% was copied, but there was an error message that said:

After I clicked on the okay button on the error message, I got another message that says the copy failed. After searching the internet for others that have received the error message above, I see a few others that have had this issue, with varying amounts that have been copied (as opposed to my supposedly 100%). I was unable to figure out from the forums where people wrote about the error message what the upshot was or what I should do. That led me to thinking about using the yucky Acronis True Image Home 2010 trial to just do the very long copy, using the clone disk feature which will cause me to specify replacement partitions and will only allow me to use FAT32. I’d then use XP’s convert e: /fs:ntfs to convert the FAT32 to NTFS, like Microsoft shows me at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307881/EN-US. I haven’t done this yet because I don’t want to wait for hours only to have it fail again. So I’m coming to you first. So here’s the bottom line. 1) First off, I want to know why the DriveImage XML failed and if there’s any chance I might do a few things to it and it be done. Btw, the new drive uses an esata 3.0gbs cable and Acronis just now showed it as a SCSI drive even though the drive inside the esata external case is sata. XP’s (Computer Management’s) Disk Management shows the new drive as unallocated. Maybe those two things are from the failed DriveImage XML drive to drive failed cloning? 2) I want to know if the above method using Acronis and XP’s convert e: /fs:ntfs will work and if it will be as good as if I had formatted NTFS myself and been able to correctly copy the files over, or if it will make important files more fragmented or something else bad-ish and how bad that might be, if at all. 3) Most importantly, I want to know if there is a better way to simply copy from my old drive to my new drive all the files without losing anything in the process. My internal C drive and the old external drive are both full to the brim and the new external drive will hold twice as much as the old external drive and the old internal drive combined. 4) As an aside, can I make a backup of the old external drive onto the new external drive, then use the backup on the new drive to restore to the same new external drive that the backup is on? I hate the idea of doing this though, since a straight copy would be faster, but I really want a nice clean copy of my old external FAT32 to my new external drive which will be NTFS when done.

2. Buy a large capacity flash drive (I’d recommend an 8 GB capacity). I just bought one at a large office supply store for $35. Plug the flash drive into one of your computer’s USB ports. Windows should recognize it and load it as a separate drive.
3. Open Windows Explorer by right clicking on the Start button and left clicking on Explore. Verify that the flash drive has set itself up as a separate drive letter. (D, E or F, etc..) Remember the drive letter, as we will use it later.
4. Now start SyncToy. The first time you run the SyncToy program, it will ask you if you want to participate in the Microsoft Customer Experience Improvement Program. I click No and OK, because I think the question is silly to ask when I haven’t used the program yet.
5. The next screen will be the Welcome page. At this point, you are going to set up the folders you want to back up. You will be “echoing” files from your C: drive to the flash drive, which might be D: drive or E: or F: drive. Click on “Create New Folder Pair”.
6. The left folders will be the folders that are on your C: drive. The right folders will be folders that you create on the flash drive. Each folder pair will be set up as a separate sequence.
7. Click the Browse button for the first left side folder. On the Browse for folder dialog box, find the first folder on your C: drive that you want to back up. I chose My Documents.

   Note: My “My Documents” folder is very large, and I’ll bet yours is too. Make sure your flash drive is large enough capacity to hold all your digital pictures and the other files you have stored in My Documents.

8. Click Next. Now click the Browse button for the Right side folder. Navigate to your Flash drive letter and click on it to highlight it. If this is a new flash drive, you’ll have to create a folder to match the one you are backing up from C: drive.
9. Click the Make New Folder button. (Make sure the new folder is on the flash drive.) Give the new folder the same name as the folder you chose to backup from the C drive. (In this scenario, that would be My Documents).
10. Click Ok, then Ok again. Click Next.
11. Now click the circle next to Echo and click Next.
12. On the next dialog box, name the folder pair (i.e, My Documents Backup) and click Finish.
13. You’ll see your folder pair listed on the left side of the dialog box.
14. Repeat these steps for all the folders you want to back up.
15. When you are done, you can run a preview, or just run the back up. The first time you run it, it will take a long time because all the files you chose to back up have to be written to the flash drive. But after that, on the subsequent runs, the SyncToy backup procedure is very fast because it only writes the files and folders that have changed, instead of writing the entire backup set over again.

Don’t forget to take your backup with you when you leave your office or home!. IMPORTANT NOTE: If you create multiple pairs of folders, make sure you choose All Folder pairs when you run your backup. Sometimes it can be saved by taking the entire hard drive into a technician for recovery and it can be a long, tedious, and expensive process.. If you have information on your computer that you want to make sure you keep, then you need to back it up in some way. Depending on how important the data is to you, you may want to consider two types of backup. Depending on the data you want to protect you may need to create a backup on a daily or even hourly basis.. There are many types of backups and many ways to do it. You can use DVDs or CDs, external hard drives, online servers, or a “thumb drive”. Burning data to a CD or DVD is very simple. Select the files you want to save and save them.
